By Jean-Claude Racinet. Francois Baucher (1796-1873) was a nineteenth century reformer who tried to reinvent equitation. His philosophy is based on seeking balance prior to movement (and as a condition for it) through supplings of the horse's head, neck, shoulders and croup at a halt. Baucher believed that softness in the horse's jaw and mouth indicated the achievement of this balance. Jean-Claude Racinet has devoted his life to the vindication of Riding in Lightness, in fact, the very essence of riding in the French Classical tradition.
